Amsterdam->Germany

Hello folks!  Since our last post, we spent a day in Rotterdam, and then made our way to Jay's cousin's in Germany.  We're in the small town of Dettenhausen, which is in southern Germany.  We spent all day Wednesday traveling from Amsterdam here, and started to get used to the train system.  Jay almost left me standing on the platform when he jumped onto a train that was leaving once, but I have a feeling that won't be the last time that happens.  Our Eurail passes make train travel simple, and there are trains in even the small towns here, so we made it practically all the way to Jay's cousin's doorstep by train.

We're excited to be in Germany because, as Jay said, "We're in beer country!"  Jay can talk all day about Bavarian purity laws and Germans only using barley, water, hops, and yeast.  The amount of different beers that can come out of those four ingredients is crazy to a non-beer connoisseur such as myself.

It's great being able to stay with family this far away from home!  We'll post pictures later, once I figure out how to hook up my iPod to a Mac...

NEMO and the Art of Doing Nothing

Yesterday, Jay and I went to NEMO, the science museum that you can see from our hostel. It is designed to be a kids museum, but we went anyway. We were surprised to see this sign when we walked in!

Just kidding. This picture is from one of the exhibits, but I think the lesson was about obeyig authority. The museum was funny because the theme was just science in general, so when we'd have a space museum, and a natural history museum, and a discovery center as different places, they were all at NEMO. There were exhibits that would never fly in a US museum, but I won't go into detail because this is a family blog.

The other thing that has taken some getting used to in this trip is the amount of downtime we have. We can sleep as late as we'd like, and being on a budget means we don't have every activity at our disposal. We're getting good at rummey, and we're spending lots of time reading. We're hoping to do more picture taking and journal writing as we get better at this doing nothing business.

Anne Frank House

Today we went to the Anne Frank House. I read her journal when I was in third grade, and seeing where she wrote it was moving. There are no pictures allowed inside, but Jay snapped this one of the entrance

Tomorrow we're hoping to go to Nemo, the science museum across the canal from our hostel.

So it begins

Yay!! We finally made it to Amsterdam! It was a long but fun journey, and we got our seats on the plane upgraded thanks to Mr. Walley. We are staying at the Vita Nova, a pretty sweet boat hostel; it's centrally located so it's been easy to explore even with this jet lag. Pictures will be up soon, but we just wanted to let you all know we made it safe, and Alison hasn't killed me yet :)
